Lever Park

The Park | Lord Leverhulme

With thanks to Gavin Hunter for his help in compiling this page.

The Park:
The famous Lancashire architect Thomas Mawson was brought in to design the gardens, which took nearly twenty years to complete. Today the ruins stand as a testament to the ingenuity and design which involved advanced drainage and the building of rows of terraces to compensate for the steepness of the slopes.

Lake in Lever ParkSteps and platforms in Lever Park on Winter Hill
There are many beautiful constructions on Winter Hill, such as this bridge in Lever Park

There are lakes, terraces, loggias, steps, bridges, towers and many beautiful views to be seen, as well as Lever's abandoned summer houses which provide useful shelter should it rain.

Lord Leverhulme:
Lord Leverhulme was a Bolton born entrepreneur who is best known for his Sunlight Soap brand with which he transformed the soap industry and pioneered modern marketing and advertising in Britain. In 1901 he bought a large area on Winter Hill and began to construct a home for himself and his wife.

The man himself was involved in many philanthropic ventures. True to his routes, he donated much of the space he developed on Winter Hill to the people of Bolton, whilst in business he was known to be a considerate employer who provided decent housing and working conditions for the employees at his factory in Port Sunlight in Liverpool.
