Plane crash The area's proximity to Manchester, combined with the Hill's height has meant that several plane crashes have been reported. The most notable of these is the crash of February 1958 when, in heavy fog and snow, a flight travelling from Douglas and bound for Manchester, crashed into the top of the hill by the transmitter mast site. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services (whose efforts were hampered by heavy snow and the remoteness of the site), only seven of the forty-two on board survived. There is a commemorative plaque on the side of the transmitter station which acknowledges both the survivors and those who perished in the area's worst air disaster.
