Rivington
Pike
Although not
quite the highest point on Winter Hill, the Pike is nonetheless the
favourite destination for those seeking a good view or as a target
to reach. Built in 1733,
the structure served as a hunting lodge for
grouse-shooting parties, as a shelter against the cold winds
(the spot is very exposed) and used by shepherds. The location was
earlier used as a beacon during the
Armada. Today the spot is visited by model glider
pilots who use the
naturally occurring thermal currents to soar during the summer months.
