Two Lads

Built on what is thought to be an Anglo-Saxon site, "Two Lads" was constructed over a period of nearly two years by Robin Smith. The two cairns commemorate the tragic death of two young men who, legend has it, perished on the site many hundreds of years ago.

The spot, which provides a panoramic view of Bolton, Rivington Pike and the transmitter mast is used by ramblers and runners as a navigation point and is a favourite resting spot for visitors who pass nearby.

When the cairns were first built, Bolton council had them destroyed on the grounds that they were a danger to safety. Undeterred Robin Smith rebuilt them and a campaign was launched by the Bolton Evening News to preserve Robin Smith, leaning on one of the two cairns - known as "Two Lads" - which he built. The peak in the distance to the right is home to Rivington Pike.

the site. Eventually Bolton Council gave up on their quest which was described by some as "vandalism".

Meanwhile, Robin Smith - who is also a ranger on Winter Hill - has found artifacts on the site dating back at least 100 years and many experts believe that the site was inhabited many hundreds of years ago. An archaeological dig was planned back in the 1980s, however the project was abandoned and so the secrets of the site and the myth of "Two Lads" remain as mysteries.
